2010 year end wrap-upThe end of 2010 is here, and a lot has happened in the music and metal world, some happy, some sad, but let's start with the good ones first.
The Sonisphere Festival is a touring music festival which takes place across Europe between June and August. Turkey held the Sonisphere festival at the same time as Romania: June 25 through 27, 2010. This part of Sonisphere was in Istanbul at BJK Inönü Stadium. The bands that played in this area were:
Metallica, Rammstein, Accept, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Heaven & Hell (cancelled), Manowar, Alice in Chains and Stone Sour.
The other metal festival was only one week after Sonisphere, UNI Rock Festival 2010 Turkey, from July 2 through July 4 2010, the participating bands were:
Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Overkill, Heaven Shall Burn, Sabaton, Grave Digger, Necrophagist, Belphegor, Dark Funeral, Amorphis, Nevermore, Volbeat, Korpiklaani and Evergrey.
Another big event in the region was Anathema's performance in Lebanon.
Next up.. The horrible side of 2010, the metal world had too many losses this year starting with the icon of heavy metal, Ronnie James Dio passed away because of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010, the world was in shock. Doctors kept everyone's hopes high by saying he was doing good and recovering, but the monstrous disease returned again later.
And we can't forget to mention Type O Negative's Peter Steele's who died of heart failure on April 14, 2010 at the age of 48 as well as Gotthard vocalist Singer Steve Lee who was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 5, 2010.
Also in the news is the departure of Mike Portnoy, drummer and one of the three founders of Dream Theater, the last thing we could’ve imagined was his departure from the band, some say Portnoy is not replaceable, others say change is good sometimes. Dream Theater will reenter the studio in January 2011 to start working on their next album, without Portnoy. Mike’s excuse to leave the band was to take a break from Dream Theater and concentrate on his side projects, but the band insisted to continue their journey in January with or without him, which makes their next album the most anticipated Prog Metal album of all time.
